Smoke and Mirrors
So much of project management is arbitrary. It's all wishy washy, crystal ball reading, tea leaf deciphering entertainment. I can't count how many times I feel like a complete snake oil salesman, even when being fully honest and transparent about a project status, because every target date and work estimate is propped up on hills of sand that crumble as soon as you think you have a footing. I suppose you could say that about anything in life in general, but it's still unbelievably frustrating for someone that takes pride in seeing something to completion to feel like the goalposts keep disappearing in the fog of war. Product development is an art, not a science, and if the fundamentals of good project management aren't there to act as guiderails, the project will wither on the vine of good intentions until it's plucked, far beyond the initial estimate of completion.
